Let's Play Stellaris: Part 29 - Self Improvement

"Much as before the conclusion of the second war didn't see any break in stride for the Cartel as they immediately turned their attention toward their empire. The occupied world of Flerm was given a more suitable governor and it's economic output turned toward helping it's new owners. The board of directors had set about a new plan, to further widen the technological gap between themselves and their neighbours as sheer weight of numbers didn't appear to be something the Cartel could match the other empires on anymore. Further fortifying of Cartel space was also planned with the theory being to remove the need for defensive fleets and turn their part of the galaxy into an unassailable bastion. It still felt like the calm before the storm, a storm the Cartel very much hoped to weather unscathed."

So here we are again people, the Fox Cartel having just settled their second war with the Unified Uriy Suns who are proving to be a tenacious rival indeed. We did however take another bite out of their territory including an inhabited colony this time so that's progress. With the war concluded however the Cartel turns it's attention inward again to rethink it's approach.

Whilst the first fleet rushes back into Cartel space to deal with some unsanctioned piracy let's figure out some objectives for our foxy friends in order to aid their bid to being the premier galactic crime syndicate.

  1. Begin working on improvements to all planets and colonies, we have a whole pile of building slots we can make use of even on our low population colonies now.
  2. Look into building habitats now that we have the means, these are basically like artificial planets almost but they have to be built in orbit of an existing planet.
  3. Build and improve trading star bases so that there is trade protection in all of Cartel territory to minimise the chances of pirates popping up. It will also improve our economy in a big way so, seems like a no-brainer to do.
  4. Go crazy with branch offices around the galaxy and try to figure out the best way to make use of them.
In a nutshell it basically is the 'Grand Plan 2.0' but the oligarch disapproved of the title. Let's check our newest acquisition, Flerm, it's specialised as a rural world and has a slightly eclectic mix of buildings on it. Their incorporation into the Cartel has put our consumer goods into the red so let's upgrade their civilian industries for now. Most other planets are building districts or upgrading buildings already or don't have the population to make use of new buildings so let's move our attention elsewhere for now.

I move one of our constructors into the Capella system with the plan of building our first habitat there just as another political faction pops up within the ranks, the 'Closed Border Foundation'. They perhaps not unsurprisingly want closed borders and a non-interference policy with the rest of the galaxy, what drivel.

The current state of the galaxy, the Cartel now has a lot of other larger empires nearby to deal with.

The vast scientific interests of the Cartel prove they are worth their salary as the society division finishes researching the military academy tech (it also gives us more occupation garrisons.) So let's see what they have for us next, nothing jumps out as immediately useful so let's grab another naval capacity tech.

It seems habitats will have to wait however as the cost of construction is a whopping 3000 alloys, yikes, maybe in a few hundred years. Maybe there's a technology that reduces the cost somewhere, for now let's just put the habitats on the back-burner our planets still have plenty of space as is. Not to mention we have far better things to spend the alloys on right now.

Time to upgrade Capella star-base to a star-fortress now and further expand it's ship yard capacity. Vulpinus also hits another big upgrade milestone and can upgrade it's capital building to a system-capital complex, sounds very fancy and filled with high-back and far too comfortable leather chairs.

Let's also upgrade a couple of these outposts to star-bases now mainly focused on trade value and trade protection as I am getting a little tired of these pirates popping up all over the place. Also any system with a colony within it also gets it's outpost upgraded to a star-base if for no other reason that a purely defensive one.

Another science victory for team physics right now as they finish ion disruptors, let's get chemical plants next just on the off-chance we ever need more volatile motes. The Alvothari and the Ziiran's are becoming much closer allies quite worryingly as they enter into research and migration treaties with one another.

The Capella shipyards, the largest ship construction facility in Cartel space.

In all the chaos of preparing for and prosecuting the war against the Uriy Suns the Cartel forgot about the 'request' of the Homolog Contiuum to colonise a tomb world. They now think we are compromised by something lending further credence to them knowing something we don't, let's just hope they don't get trigger happy about it.

More tech finishes researching in the form of upgraded mineral purification hubs, that'll help boost the output of our mining world Lycaon Prime. So let's knock out the standardised corvette patterns to make our smallest ships cheaper and faster to build. For the most part things appear to be ticking over nicely, most of our resources have a health surplus income, colonies have enough housing and jobs and a handful of branch offices have been placed down in our neighbours territories.

Another physics tech completed, we don't need the chemical plants just yet but it's nice to have them just in case. Next up I think it's time to further push the Cartel's high tech edge and get even better labs for our scientists, it will likely mean we need more consumer goods to maintain them though but not a massive issue to solve if it arises.

I know this has been a relatively slow empire building part but I hope you enjoy it as much as the wars and space battles! For now though I'll end it here, hope you enjoyed reading, all feedback, support, tips, ideas and chat are very welcome!

Til next time!
