Let's Play Stellaris: Part 18 - WAR!

"Whilst the media and public speeches painted the pirates as mercenaries likely endorsed by a hostile power the truth was far simpler than the spin it was given. The Cartel endorsed plenty of pirates, smugglers, assassins and the like but only if they paid their fees, this group had decided the fees were 'too much' so they were dismissed. However after they then turned on the Cartel, severely damaging an outpost meaning the first fleet was deployed. The renegade pirates didn't have long to regret their mistake as the advanced weapons of the Cartel fleet smashed their ships apart. They learned the hard way not to cross the Cartel."

Here we are once more at the helm of the Fox Cartel and it's rise to glory and galactic prominence (with a tidy profit margin.) Currently we still have a bit of a food and consumer goods deficit although the food part should take care of itself soon enough. We have a new colony in the process of being established in Nova Druzhnik and we are still building up our fleet ahead of taking on the Unified Uriy Suns. The main issue right now is I simply don't have enough loyal fox citizens to do all the work that needs done which has bottle-necked a lot of resources but time will fix most of that (I hope.)

Right now though I need to wait for my alloys to build up then fully reinforce the first fleet, then move them to the bordering system of Qabji and begin the first hostile take-over for the Fox Cartel. In the meantime the engineering division finishes it's research into carrier operations which will give us some more ship design options down the line. Our next choice is an easy one as the option for researching cruisers is available so that is a no-brainer. Then the social division pips the physics division to the post and helps improve our farmers, next up the best option of those I have is to increase overall habitability, off you go science people I am trying to prepare for a war here.

Whilst I wait impatiently for the physics division to finish researching our improved shields I sell off some excess minerals to see if I can buy the alloys I need. I scrounge together enough alloys to fully reinforce the first fleet and start them building, I'll retro-fit the new shields in after that is done. Meanwhile let's improve our technicians so we get more energy credits as once the fleet leaves orbit it's upkeep will skyrocket.

With the requisition order in and the shipyards working at full tilt we actually get to choose another tradition. Now we have finished with discovery and prosperity so let's see what else might be beneficial to our fledgling criminal empire. Given we are about to go to war the two tradition branches that seem most useful to me are Domination and Supremacy. I go for supremacy though, the Fox Cartel is a militaristic entity, plus adopting it gives our armies a 20% damage boost (and another 2 star-base cap increase.)

The galaxy is getting crowded.

With the first fleet now fully reinforced and retrofit I move forward with my plans for the invasion, moving the first fleet in a parade formation past Vulpinus with the assault transports in two behind it is time for the Fox Cartel to make it's mark on the galaxy. Before we go off and declare war and whilst waiting for the two fleets to make their way to the border, we get our society tech done, more habitability is always good so let's see what's next before we go fry our mushroom neighbours.

Extra leader lifespan (never a bad thing), star-base buildings to improve our fleet, food processing facilities (which boost total food production on planets), however I opt for the tile blocker clearing tech for glaciers for now, extra district slots eventually!

The new larger first fleet and the assault transports carrying our troops make a fly-by of Vulpinus before heading off to war.

So here we are at last, on the cusp of our first foray into full on total galactic warfare, the Uriy Suns have no idea what we are planning but I wait for the fleet to arrive at the border system. Now I can't make them into a subsidiary unless they are massively weaker than me so I make claims on six of their systems including one with a planet of theirs in. If I can weaken them enough it may allow me to just force them into it later. I do have to close the branch office before I can declare war but here we go. To war foxes, take their shiny things!

As we occupy the first outpost and prepare to leave for the next the Uriy Suns fleet exits the hyper-lane practically on top of the first fleet causing a vicious point-blank range melee between the two fleets. Two Cunning-class corvettes succumb to the hail of enemy fire before they can react but the first fleet quickly recovers destroying a total of 14 enemy corvettes with the rest fleeing under the onslaught.

The first fleet tries to push deeper into Uriy Suns space but has to pull back to engage their fleet, whilst they attempt to flee they get caught at the edge of the system and promptly attacked however they all manage to escape before serious casualties are inflicted. However sensors then detect the enemies other main fleet approaching which will be the true test of whether our military is superior to theirs.

The first fleet gets ambushed by a Uriy Suns fleet and engages them in vicious melee.

The battle is vicious as the first fleet ambushes the Uriy Suns fleet as it exits the hyper-lane. For a cost of three Cunning-class corvettes the Uriy Suns fleet suffers eleven losses, with the remaining ships fleeing. It would appear our technological edge is significant now we just have to try and nudge their war exhaustion up to 100% before ours gets there and then we can claim these six systems and hopefully weaken them enough to get them as a subsidiary.

With the war now well under way and things looking a bit more exciting I'm going to be an tease and leave this as a 'to be continued!' moment. I do hope you enjoy reading and do please feel free to leave feedback, tips, thoughts, ideas etc I love it when people actually interact with me, I don't bite! (Much.)

The first fleet returns the earlier ambush by attacking the Uriy Suns main fleet as it exits the hyper-lane.
